CASE: From Waste to Taste

CASE: From Waste to Taste

From Waste to Taste was a circular economy project launched by Rhea to combat climate change by reducing food waste. Preparation for the project started in the spring of 2015 with the creation of a partner network. In February 2016, the first lunches made from food in shops that would have otherwise been wasted were served in a pop-up restaurant. Following this, Restaurant Loop opened in Lapinlahti in June 2016. However, this had to close due to the COVID pandemic. The From Waste to Taste project did not aim to make a profit, and its operation was completely separated from Rhea’s business at the beginning of 2016.

The project successfully made an impression on Finnish thinking about waste food. For example, after Loop, several church congregations started similar activities and the S-Group supermarket chain increased their sales of products at risk of being wasted by providing additional discounts.
